After a few early experiments in operating portable, Justin and I decided to take the plunge and do an actual POTA at Illahee State Park. We’d been bike camping here a few times since it’s one of the more bike accessible state parks from Seattle because of the Seattle-Bremerton ferry. It’s only about a mile to the ferry from our home, then about 3.5 miles (albeit uphill) from the Bremerton side to the park.

Having done the bike ride before, we decided we’d do this POTA on our Brompton folding bikes.

Bromptons

I was able to fit my FT-891, EFHW antenna and everything else into my 28L Brompton large borough bag.

Upon getting to the park, we found a nice picnic table to set up near the boat dock and water. While I made the first few contacts, Justin walked around making some 2m and 70cm contacts before I passed the HF mic to him.

On our way back, we stopped at a great Thai restaurant with nice outdoor seating that we’d been to before on camping trips.
